Center for the Integration of Undergraduate, Graduate and Postdoctoral Research

The Center for the Integration of Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postdoctoral Research (I-Center) was established in the fall of 2006 to promote and advance an integrated approach to undergraduate and graduate research in the Mathematics Department at KSU.

To further these ends, the I-Center fosters groups of undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and faculty jointly working on cutting edge problems in applied mathematics, pure mathematics and interdisciplinary areas. In the preferred model, senior faculty help postdoctoral fellows develop research projects suitable for undergraduates and show them techniques for engaging undergraduates in mathematical research. Faculty and postdoctoral fellows interact with graduate students, both mentoring their research and involving the graduate students in the undergraduate research mentoring process.

With the support of the Brent P. Smith Memorial Endowment for Mathematics Enrichment, and the Evan Stewart Endowment for the Enrichment of Mathematics, the I-Center awards grants to undergraduate and graduate students to fund research projects under the supervision of faculty or postdoctoral fellows. These student grant recipients are designated as I-Center Undergraduate or Graduate Scholars. At the national level, I-Center Undergraduate Scholars have obtained prestigious awards including four Goldwater scholarships, a Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship, an NSF Graduate Fellowship, a Department of Defense SMART Scholarship, a Fulbright fellowship, and an Honorable Mention in connection with the Alice T. Shafer Prize for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics. At the K-State level, the first three annual University Awards for Distinguished Undergraduate Student in Research have been given to I-Center Scholars.

The NSF sponsored REU summer program provides undergraduate students from other institutions with the opportunity to visit K-State and carry out research projects under the guidance of faculty, I-Center postdoctoral fellows and I-Center graduate student scholars. With the goal of promoting students success in mathematical competitions and professional examinations, the I-Center runs a number of undergraduate seminars such as the Putnam Seminar, the Mathematical Modeling Seminar, and the GRE Seminar. In addition, the I-Center sponsors lectures, including the Brent P. Smith Memorial Lectures, the K-State Undergraduate Lectures in Mathematics, and various conferences and courses.
