In a commutative ring with identity, every maximal ideal is prime. Thus, M is a prime ideal in R and since M₁M₂ ^{. . .} M_r < M, it follows that M_i < M for some i. Since M_i is maximal and M is, by default, proper, it follows that M_i = M.
