Differential Topology (math876) Spring 2006

Lecture times and rooms: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30-12:20 in CW122 and Wednesdays 8:30-9:20 also in CW122. There will be three extra classes on the Fridays January 27, February 3 and 10 at 8:30-9:20 in CW143.

We will mainly follow the book

Ib Madsen and Jorgen Tornehave, From Calculus to Cohomology. De Rham cohomology and characteristic classes, Cambridge University Press (1997).

We will use [MT] to refer to that book, in particular in the homework problems. The prerequisites for this course are:

(i) Standard linear algebra - vector spaces, linear maps, determinants.
(ii) Standard multivariable real calculus.
(iii) Basic point set topology - topological spaces, continuous maps, homeomorphisms, compact spaces, (path)connected spaces and so on.
