This course is the second year in a two-year sequence in the IB Higher-Level Mathematics component of the IB Diploma Program. The curriculum is outlined in detail in the publication Mathematics HL—First examinations 2006 (to be handed out in class). We outline a few important aspects of this curriculum below.

There are

**two**graded portfolios: one is based on a**mathematical investigation**and the second is based on**mathematical modelling**. The**mathematical modeling**portfolio will be assigned during the**junior year**and the**mathematical investigation**portfolio will be assigned during the**senior year**.The examinations are to be in

**three**parts, organized as follows.**Paper 1**(2 hours) consists of**20**compulsory short-response questions based on the compulsory core of the syllabus.**Paper 2**(2 hours) consists of**5**compulsory extended-response questions based on the compulsory core of the syllabus.**Paper 3**(1 hour) consists of extended-response questions based on the syllabus option topic.

The syllabus option topic is to be selected from one of the following

**four**options:- Statistics and probability
- Sets, relations, and groups
- Series and differential equations
- Discrete mathematics
