This course is the second year in a two-year sequence in the IB Higher-Level Mathematics component of the IB Diploma Program. The curriculum is outlined in detail in the publication Mathematics HL—First examinations 2006 (to be handed out in class). We outline a few important aspects of this curriculum below.

• There are two graded portfolios: one is based on a mathematical investigation and the second is based on mathematical modelling. The mathematical modeling portfolio will be assigned during the junior year and the mathematical investigation portfolio will be assigned during the senior year.

• The examinations are to be in three parts, organized as follows.

  1. Paper 1 (2 hours) consists of 20 compulsory short-response questions based on the compulsory core of the syllabus.

  2. Paper 2 (2 hours) consists of 5 compulsory extended-response questions based on the compulsory core of the syllabus.

  3. Paper 3 (1 hour) consists of extended-response questions based on the syllabus option topic.

• The syllabus option topic is to be selected from one of the following four options:

  1. Statistics and probability
  2. Sets, relations, and groups
  3. Series and differential equations
  4. Discrete mathematics
  The choice of which option we pursue will be decided largely on the basis of the students' interests and aptitides. (My 2006 and 2007 seniors studied the sets, relations, and groups option. My 2008 and 2009 seniors studied the series and differential equations option.)
