Title: Using the Internet for Teaching and Learning Mathematics Outside the Traditional Course Structure
Abstract: This paper will use some Math Forum projects as case examples of the way in which the Internet is used, misused, and might be used to teach and learn mathematics. Three types of projects which involve elementary through college-level students and teachers in various ways will be described: (1) Problem of the Week (a resource of challenging problems that engage students in conversation about their problem solving); (2) The Internet Resource Collection (an open-ended resource that enables teachers and students to locate and/or search for information about mathematics and math teaching); and (3) Ask Dr. Math (a resource that enables students and others to pursue their mathematics questions with a thoughtful person). All of the problem sets, collected information, and exchanges involved in these projects are archived, allowing students and teachers to use them as they need them. Connections of professional mathematicians (and their students) to these projects will be described.
