Title: Mathematics on the Web: Looking Back and Looking Forward.
Abstract: The world-wide web and the internet have become tremendously popular in a remarkably short period of time. Web addresses are now common in television commercials, radio broadcasts, news and information programs, even on the sides of busses. What does this medium offer for mathematicians? This presentation will consider some ways that mathematics can be comminucated electronically, and will center around a mathematical research paper that used this new technology. It will discuss both the mathematics of an interesting result in the theorey of tight polyhedral surfaces as well as the electronic media involved. The talk will conclude with a glimpse of some articles being developed for a new electronic journal in mathematics devoted to using hypertext and hypermedia in a significant way. This presentation should be of interest to both working mathematicians, and those interested in computers and electronic communication.
