Undergraduate Research in Mathematics at Kansas State UniversityThe KSU mathematics department has been very successful mentoring undergraduate research projects. The Goldwater Scholarship Program is the leading national scholarship for undergraduate research in the US. During the last 20 years, 63 K-State students - including 26 math majors - have won Goldwater scholarships. The Goldwater is the premier scholarship competition for mathematics, science and engineering students in the U.S., and only Princeton and Harvard have more Goldwater scholars than K-State.The success of undergraduate research in mathematics at K-State is due to the faculty mentoring. Virtually any faculty member is willing to mentor an undergraduate research project. If you are interested in pursuing undergraduate mathematics research, you may directly contact any of our faculty listed on the Faculty Areas of Research page. In addition to informal mentoring relationships, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling team provides students with an opportunity to work with other students as a team on an open ended contest problem. This is a good introduction to mathematical research. In the three years that KSU has been competing in the MCM, it has had four teams awarded meritorious. We encourage you to apply for Internship, Research Program, and Study Abroad. In recent years, we have had nearly 70 Internship, Exchange Program, and Research Program Participants. There are many special programs for undergraduates interested in mathematics. See the links on the side bar and below.
