1991 K-State Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics

Lectures by four distinguished visiting mathematicians and an alumnus were the highlights of our Undergraduate Lecture Series at Kansas State University in the fall of 1991.

Sterling Berberian, an eminent mathematician from the University of Texas, gave a mini-course on Groups and equivalence relations for our undergraduates. Wistar Comfort, an eminent mathematician from Wesleyan University, gave an undergraduate lecture on Cardinal arithmetic and the continuum hypothesis. Barry Mazur, a renowned mathematician from Harvard University, visited Kansas State and gave a talk to our undergraduates entitled What are group representations? Karen Uhlenbeck, a MacArthur Fellow from the University of Texas, gave an undergraduate lecture on the Differential symmetry groups.

Paul Stallsworth, a 1972 K-State mathematics alumnus originally from Garden City, delivered a lecture on Mathematics and modernity: numbers serving ideology. Paul is now pastor of the Crestwell Charge of the United Methodist Church in North Carolina.

Wayne Peeler, representing Farmers Alliance Mutual Insurance Company of McPherson, presented a talk on The actuarial field. Jerry Nebbia, representing Mercer Consulting Company of Kansas City, gave a talk on Career opportunities in the actuarial profession.
