1988 K-State Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics

Lectures by three distinguished visiting mathematicians and an alumna were the highlights of our Undergraduate Lecture Series at Kansas State University in 1988.

Hugh Montgomery, an emminent mathematician from the University of Michigan, gave an outstanding undergraduate lecture on Peg solitaire in the spring of 1988. In the fall of 1988, Saul Stahl, a mathematician from Kansas University, gave a mini-course which was an Introduction to the mathematical theory of games of strategy. John Conway, a renowned mathematician from Princeton University, gave a lecture on The game of life.

Stephanie Berggren Tharman, a 1988 K-State mathematics alumna originally from Clay Center, gave a talk entitled How to make yourself marketable.

Jerry Nebbia, representing Mercer Consulting Company in Kansas City, gave a talk entitled Career opportunities in the actuarial sciences. Cindy Alley, representing Electronic Data Systems in Dallas, described some Career opportunities in the computing and mathematical sciences.

Five of our own faculty gave lectures in the Undergraduate Lecture Series. Tom Muenzenberger gave a talk entitled Mathematical specialties. Kadosa Halasi described a Numerical simulation of the three body problem. Todd Cochrane gave a talk entitled Solving equations in integers. Dan Curtis gave a presentation on the Computer generation of fractals. Dave Surowski spoke about Knights, knaves, and provability.
