S. Thomas Parker Mathematical  Competition

(Date Moved Up for Banquet During Mathematics Awareness Month)

9am-12pm, in Cardwell Hall at Manhattan Capmus
Goal: To promote mathematical awareness and academic excellence among undergraduate students at Kansas State University and to recognize and reward K-State students for their outstanding mathematical ability and achievements. This is also part of a nationwide effort to promote  students' performance in mathematics and science and to prepare them  to meet the rapidly changing technological world.

Participation:  Anyone who is enrolled full time in K-State and is during their first two years of college at the time of the competition is eligible and encouraged to participate. 

Award:   (A) Cash Prizes. The top performers will be awarded cash prizes:

FIRST PLACE:  $300
SECOND PLACE: $200
THIRD PLACE: $100
SEVERAL HONORABLE MENTIONS: $20/ea.        

    (B)  Certificates. In addition to the cash awards mentioned above, each of the top three prize winners will be presented an award certificate.  Each of the top prize winners may also designate a K-State student organization, in which the  winner is a member, to receive a plaque honoring the student's prize winning performance.   The organization could be any registered student organization, Greek house, or residence hall.
    (C)  Banquet. The top three cash prize winners will be invited guests to the Friends of Mathematics Banquet on April 7, 2009 in the K-State Union.  (Attendance is optional.)     (D) Recognition:  Winners will be announced on the  S. Thomas Parker Mathematical Competition  Web page of Kansas State University. The names of prize winners  will also be sent to news media including the Collegian and the winners' hometown newspapers.  Department of Mathematics will have the  top three winners' names printed on a plaque on display in Cardwell Hall.

Topics Covered: The  S. Thomas Parker Mathematical Competition will test over high school and first year college mathematics up to Calculus II.  Calculator is allowed but not necessary.

Registration:  The registration form is on the internet and can be downloaded or picked up from the information boxes outside CW 138. Preregistration is strongly encouraged, though on site registrations will also be accepted.  The competition is free and there is no registration fee. Fill out all information on the registration form and mail it to the Mathematics Department, CW 138.
