Here are displays the Department of Mathematics has had at Open House in previous years.

In Cardwell Hall

Cryptography: Learn how to code and decode secret messages.

Fractals: Learn how fractals are used in everything from snowflakes to high speed internet connections. What's inside your cell phone?

Games of Chance and Probability: Discover the math behind many intriguing games of chance.

Math Puzzles: Attempt our tantalizing puzzles.

Mazes: Try our GIANT floor mazes. Great fun and entertainment for young and old.

Musical Scales: See how your voice sounds mathematically!

Topology: Discover the beauty of pure math and build your own Möbius Strip (which is a one-sided surface). Topology is the branch of math that deals with how spaces can be streched, folded, and bent into other spaces. Topology is used in Map Coloring: How many different colors does it take to color a map of the United States so that no two adjoining states have the same color? Discover the answer to this question and see how this relates to math.

Math Club: This display reveals the many varied activities of the Math Club. You also can talk to a Math Club representative if you are interested in joining.

I-Q Center for Integrated Research: Tours by request. Get a firsthand look at the I-Q Integrated Research Center's computer classrooms and try your hand at some of the math software. These advanced computer technology labs are used in Applied Matrix Theory, Differential Equations, Digital Image Processing, Numerical Analysis, and other math and physics courses as well as integrated research in a variety of fields of study.

In the K-State Union

Math Careers: Discover the many Careers Opportunities open to math graduates. Learn about the K-State Undergraduate Math Program.

Math Competitions: Challenge your creativity with problems from K-12 and College math competitions.
