March 2009 : Math modeling team successfully participates
A team of Kansas State University students successfully participated in the 2009 Mathematical Contest in Modeling. This year, 1675 teams representing institutions from fourteen countries participated in the contest.

Each team of three students had to choose one of two different mathematical modeling problems and then work together at their institution to solve the problem. The goal of Problem A, Designing a Traffic Circle, is to use a model to determine how best to control traffic flow in, around, and out of a circle, clearly stating the objective(s) used in the model and summarizing the conditions under which each type of traffic-control method should be used. Problem B, Energy and the Cell Phone, involves the energy consequences of the cell phone revolution. Cell phone usage is mushrooming and many people are using cell phones and giving up their landlines. What is the consequence of this in terms of electricity use?

The K-State team consisting of Andrew Featherstone and Michael Reppert successfully worked on Problem A.

Professors David Auckly, Ivan Blank, Marianne Korten, Diego Maldonado, Ray Treinen, and Dan Volok are the K-State MCM team advisors.
