April 2008 : Math modeling teams receive Honorable Mention
Two teams of Kansas State University students received Honorable Mention in the 2008 Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Only 14 percent of the teams world wide were given a higher rating. This year, 1162 teams representing institutions from fourteen countries participated in the contest.

Each team of three students had to choose one of two different mathematical modeling problems and then work together at their institution to solve the problem. Problem A, Take a Bath, asked teams to consider the effects on land from the melting of the North Polar Ice Cap due to the predicted increase in global temperatures. Problem B, Creating Sudoku Puzzles, asked teams to develop an algorithm to construct Sudoku puzzles of varying difficulty.

Both K-State teams worked on Problem B. One K-State team consisted of William Carlson, Jeffrey Hicks, and John Stewart, and the other consisted of Asma Al-Rawi, Dory Deines, and Rui Zhou.

Professors David Auckly, Ivan Blank, Marianne Korten, Diego Maldonado, Ray Treinen, and Dan Volok are the K-State MCM team advisors.
