May 2009 : K-State finishes first in the Kansas Collegiate Mathematics Competition
A team from Kansas State University placed first in a three way tie with a team from Emporia State University and a team from the University of Kansas in the recent 2009 Kansas Collegiate Mathematics Competition.

Moreover, a K-State student finished first individually and another finished second in a four way tie with two students from Emporia State University and one from the University of Kansas.

This was the fifth year in a row that a K-State student finished first and the fourth year out of five that a K-State team finished first in the KCMC.

The competition was part of the Kansas section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America which was held at Pittsburg State University.

Along with K-State, teams taking part in the competition included Baker University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, and the University of Kansas.

Members of the K-State team placing first in the competition were Hui Cao, a senior in mathematics from Beijing, Daniel Czerniewski, a senior in computer science and mathematics from Overland Park, and Shane Scott, a freshman in mathematics and physics from Dodge City.

Members of the K-State team placing fifth in the competition were Will Carlson, a senior in mathematics from Overland Park, Sam Henke, senior in computer science and mathematics from Salina, and Mike Reppert, senior in biochemistry, chemistry, and mathematics from Manhattan.

Hui Cao finished first individually in the competition, and Mike Reppert finished second in a four way tie with two students from Emporia State University and one student from the University of Kansas.

Team coach for the K-State teams was Virginia Naibo, Assistant Professor of mathematics.
