News Details

April 2004 : K-State Students are 8th in the world in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling
The contest was released on the World Wide Web at 8pm EST on Thursday February 5, 2004. Teams of three students worked on their projects together at their institutions. The contest ended 8pm EST on Monday February 9, 2004. A total of 599 teams competed.

Two teams from K-State participated in the competition. Both teams were awarded Meritorious. Only 7 teams around the world did better.

Teams had to choose and solve one of three different mathematical modeling problems.

The K-State Team consisting of Chris Bonnell, Andover; Michael Higgins, Manhattan; and Mark Norfleet, Wichita designed a quick pass system for an amusement park together with a mathematical model to predict and evaluate how the system would work.

The K-State Team consisting of Asma Al-Rawi, Manhattan; Steven Gilbertson, Overland Park; and Jonathan Whitmer, Wilson designed a model to evaluate the effectivness of fingerprint identification in forensic investigation.
