K-State Students Rank High in the 2005 Putnam Math Competition

Jeffrey Amos, senior in math and stat, Olathe, ranked in the top 3 percent and Matthew Burkemper, senior in math, Derby, ranked in the top 7 percent of the 3,545 participants in the 2005 Putnam Math Competition. Jeffrey had one of the top two performances among Big 12 participants. The Putnam is the highest level math competition for undergraduates in the United States and Canada.

Michael Higgins, senior in math and stat, Manhattan, ranked in the top 18 percent in the 2005 competition. William Carlson, junior in math, Overland Park, ranked in the top 23 percent. Aly Deines, senior in math, Woodbine, ranked in the top 30 percent. Brian Anderson, junior in math and music education, Salina, ranked in the top 43 percent. Samuel Henke, sophomore in computer science and math, Salina, ranked in the top 50 percent.

The K-State team composed of Jeffrey Amos, Matthew Burkemper, and Michael Higgins ranked 26th among the 500 participating colleges and universities in the 2005 competition. This was K-State's 2nd highest finish ever, behind only our 12th place and top public university ranking in 1996

Professors David Auckly, Todd Cochrane, Louis Crane, Zongzhu Lin, Tom Muenzenberger, Gabriel Nagy, Christopher Pinner, Petro Poggi-Corradini and Hunan Yang are the K-State Putnam team coaches.
