K-State Students Finish First and Second in the Big 12
in the 2004 Putnam Math Competition

Matthew Burkemper, senior in math, Derby, and Jeffrey Amos, junior in math and stat, Olathe, finished first and second among Big 12 participants in the 2004 Putnam Math Competition. Matthew ranked 44th and Jeffrey ranked 69th overall among the 3,733 participants. The Putnam is the highest level math competition for undergraduates in the United States and Canada.

Julia Galstad, senior in math, Wichita, ranked in the top 16 percent in the 2004 competition. Kevin McBeth, junior in math, econ, and stat, Topeka, ranked in the top 20 percent. Jonathan Whitmer, senior in math and physics, Manhattan, ranked in the top 22 percent. Michael Higgins, senior in math and stat, Manhattan, ranked in the top 30 percent. Adam Gelroth, junior in math, Manhattan, ranked in the top 37 percent.

The K-State team composed of Jeffrey Amos, Matthew Burkemper, and Michael Higgins ranked 30th among the 515 colleges and universities in the 2004 competition.

Professors David Auckly, Todd Cochrane, Louis Crane, Zongzhu Lin, Tom Muenzenberger, Gabriel Nagy, Christopher Pinner, Pietro Poggi-Corradini, and Huanan Yang are the K-State Putnam team coaches.
