Kansas State University Students Finish 25th in the 1999 Putnam Mathematical Competition

Manhattan - Kansas State University's Putnam Team finished 25th in the 1999 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition and ranked in the top 7 percent of the 346 teams in the Competition. This was their best performance since the 1996 Competition when the K-State Putnam team finished 12th overall and first among all public universities. Kansas State's best 5 finishes have come in the last 10 years, and, during that time, Kansas State finished first in the Big 8/12 Conference in the Putnam Competition on 4 separate occasions. The University of Waterloo won the 1999 Putnam Competition.

K-State's top scorer was Ali Mohammad who finished 79th among the 2,900 students in the Putnam Competition and ranked in the top 3 percent of the competitors. This was the best performance ever by a K-Stater. In addition, he was the top student in the Big 12 Conference. Mohammad hails from Manhattan, and is a junior in mathematics, computer engineering, computer science and physics.

Trevor Fast, a senior mathematics major from Wichita, placed in the top 10 percent, and Brandon Green, a junior mathematics major from Overland Park, placed in the top 15 percent of the competitors. Michael Haverkamp, a senior mathematics major from Shawnee, Aaron Schroeder, a senior mathematics major from Wichita and Chris Shane, a senior mathematics major from Salina, placed in the top 25 percent of the competitors.
