Goldwater Scholarship Program

The purpose of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers. The program is designed to foster and encourage excellence in those fields of academic study and research. Here is a link to the national Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program Homepage.

The Goldwater Scholarship application materials include the statement: "Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their nomination materials an essay discussing a significant issue or problem in their field of study that is of particular interest to them. The essay must include a description of the issue or problem, a discussion of an idea for research that could have significant impact on the issue or problem, a description of an aspect of the research in which the nominee would be involved, and an explanation of the relevance of the issue or problem to the nominee as a mathematician or scientist. Nominees must also include a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees."

During the last 20 years, 63 Kansas State University students - including 26 math majors - have won Goldwater scholarships. Here are the K-State mathematics majors who are Goldwater Scholars and here is a National Summary of the Colleges and Universities.
