Academics
The intellectual portion of the program will have several components. The main component of the program will be student research. We will help the participants find interesting research problems to study. In this first week we will give seminars on mathematical software packages, mathematical writing style and typesetting. Throughout the program, we will run a "basic notions of mathematics" seminar to introduce students to various areas of modern mathematics. Each student will be asked to select a research problem to pursue for the bulk of the program. This problem will probably come from one of the early basic notions seminars. Students may work together or alone. Each student will have a faculty mentor (twenty members of the K-State mathematics department will work with students in this program). In latter weeks, we will run many problem sessions and seminars on mathematical methods related to the student research projects.
During the last week, we will run a mini-conference where students will present the results of their research. Papers from this program will be posted on the KSU web page, and we will help students submit their work for publication when it is ready. We will have a number of other interesting seminars including:
- Finding and applying to graduate programs in mathematics
- How to succeed in a graduate program in mathematics
- Mathematical career opportunities
