Calculator and Computer Recommendations
Department of Mathematics - Kansas State University
The following information was taken from recent course syllabi. Students should check the
Current Semester Syllabi
for the most accurate and up to date information.MATH 100 College Algebra: A type of TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator is required.
MATH 150 Plane Trigonometry: A scientific calculator is required with a storage location and keys equivalent to the following: sin, cos, tan, log, ln, INV, and yx.
MATH 205 General Calculus and Linear Algebra: A calculator capable of college-level calculus and graphing, say a TI-series graphing calculator, is required.
MATH 220 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I: Any scientific calculator will do. Calculators are permitted for use during the exams.
MATH 221 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II: A graphing calculator such as a TI-83 or TI-84 Plus is strongly recommended. Calculators will not be permitted on exams.
MATH 222 Analytic Geometry and Calculus III: Calculators may be used on the exams.
MATH 240 Elementary Differential Equations: Java applets are provided for the lab assignments on the course homepage.
MATH 551 Applied Matrix Theory: The program Matlab is provided for the lab assignments in our computing lab in Cardwell 41 and in other computing labs around campus.
Calculators to consider are the TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, TI-89, and Voyage 200. The TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus have some calculus programming, but the TI-89 and Voyage 200 have extensive calculus programming. The TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus are used in College Algebra classes, but the TI-89 and Voyage 200 would be useful in a wide range of math courses. For more information, see the Texas Instruments graphing calculators web page http://education.ti.com/us/product/graphing.html.
Students may access educational resources on the internet in our computing lab in Cardwell 41, in the University Computing Labs, and in the K-State InfoCommons in Hale Library. Phone and ethernet lines are available in dorm rooms for students to use personal computers to access the campus network and the internet.
Computer recommendations for beginning students at K-State are online at http://www.ksu.edu/InfoTech/buying.
