MATH 499C   The Rise of Abstraction in Analysis

Dr. Bertram Yood from Pennsylvania State University will give an undergraduate mini-course on The Rise of Abstraction in Analysis in the fall semester of 1996. The class will meet during the week of October 7 - 10 only. Interested students should sign up for 1 credit of MATH 499.

The introduction of the notation of metric spaces into analysis in the early 1900' s led to new ideas and methods. The period 1900-World War II saw the development of Banach spaces, Banach algebras, and the theory of linear operators. These are facets o f a subject called functional analysis which is a central part of modern analysis. This subject is being vigorously pursued today in the entire mathematical world. Important research is continuing at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University in this area.
