Dr. Esty is a professor of mathematics at Montana State University. He is the author of two textbooks, The Language of Mathematics and Precalculus Concepts. The first of these represent his major interest in mathematics education, and he has published his research in widely varying journals such as the 1996 NCTM Yearbook on Communication in Mathematics. He comments, "In a technology-rich learning environment, assessment still needs to measure learning and not just the power of the student's calculator."
