Text:  Topics in Algebra,  2nd Edition,  by I.N. Herstein

Topics:

Math 730 will cover the first three chapters of Herstein's book:  Number Theory, Group Theory and Ring Theory.
The second semester, Math 731 we will cover  chapters 4,5,6: Vector Spaces, Modules, Field Theory and Linear Algebra.
The course will help prepare graduate students for the Qualifying exam in Algebra.

Grading:

1) Weekly Homework Assignments worth 16 points each. Probably 12 assignments altogether, worth a total of 192 points.   Assignments will be due on Friday in class: Aug 27, Sep 3, Sep 10, Sep 17, Sep 24, Oct 8, Oct 15, Oct 22, Oct 29, Nov 5, Nov 19, Dec 3

2) Two Midterms worth 100 points each,  October 1 and November 12 (tentative dates.)

3) Final Exam worth 160 points.
